New exhibit: The Eastern States Exposition – A Centennial Celebration

The Eastern States Exposition was founded a century ago to improve the conditions of our region’s agriculture, which was then in a state of decline, and strengthen the economic relationship between agriculture, industry, and area consumers.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Exposition – home of the Springfield Horse Show, Storrowton Village, the Avenue of States, and the Better Living Center – the museum’s current exhibit features artifacts spanning the fair’s first hundred years.

Items on display from the Exposition’s inaugural event, the National Dairy Show of 1916, include a souvenir program, ribbons, exhibitor pin, and local newspapers covering the event.

Also part of the exhibit is information about the Eastern States Movement; Exposition founder Joshua L. Brooks; early and longtime supporter Horace A. Moses; and advertising, programs, ribbons, trophies, posters and pins from the last hundred years.

The centennial edition of the Exposition, known as The Big E since the mid 1960s, will take place at the West Springfield fairgrounds from September 16 – October 2, 2016.
